Representation of gender - Margaret :)

In the clip, the traits of the traditional woman and some of the lesbian woman are represented through the character Margaret, showing the transition of a weak woman, almost controlled by men, evident in the slow zoom of the head and shoulder shot, whilst the 'traditional man' is talking of her and mocking her, to the male gaze as she is walking through the corridors, cutting to various extreme high angle shots, expressing her rising power. We also see two types of men: the traditional men evident in the mocking laughter and the mise en scene of their costume; their suits and we also see traits of the gay man, at the end of the scene where the men are 'bitching' about the man who had earlier spoke. These traits are all enhanced by the camera shots/ angles, the diegetic and non diegetic sounds, editing and the mise en scene.

First and foremost, at the start of the scene we see a man in a suit - traditional man? - shot in a mid shot, behind what seems to be a light on the table, this light could be a representation of the 'pure woman' he is about to violate with his words and mock with his laughter, which is a clear sign of a traditional man, we are also looking up at this man in a low angle shot, which almost emphasises his power. We then cut to various traditional men in the room whilst hearing the diegetic sound of the mans dialogue: here there is a lack of background sound, only the ambience, which in this case is silence, this highlights the dominance of the man speaking. In between the cuts of the men, still while this man is speaking, we cut to shots of a woman ( Margaret ), who is dressed in a purple suit - could suggest royalty - and has a gold broach which could suggest a trait of the traditional woman. The woman is shot in a head and shoulder shot, and it very slowly zooms in closer to her, this could be because the people in the room are talking about her, but this could also highlight her slow rising anger. There is moment where all the traditional men laugh at her, and we hear after a slightly high pitched drone, which is almost painful for the ears, this could emphasise the hurt the words are causing the woman, highlighting her weakness; after the laughter we also quickly cut to the womans hands, where we see an engagement ring and wedding ring on her finger - traditional woman? - and then very quickly cut to a close up of her face, which could suggest it is starting to get personal and the woman is is even more emphasised as weak.

  1. This a very good analysis so far... given the time frame I think you did pretty good. I like the way in which you started out your analysis, that little introduction really helps set the scene, and it also highlights the representations you have picked to analyse.

You have used a range of elements from camera, sound and costume to identify how they are constructed the male and female representation, and this is very impressive. The one suggestion I would like to make is with regard to identifying elements of mise-en-scene... if you think that wearing a broche or a wedding ring helps create the representation that you are analysing then it would be useful to label it a "prop" and then states what the prop actually is.
Also, when you are talking about low angle shot or high angle shot it would be useful to state what type of shot they actually are, for example, "we see at low shot looking up at a man and this links to his power", we can change it to something like " we see our long shot looking up at a man in a close up, which links to how powerful he is ".

Overall, this is a very impressive response, you only had 20 minutes to type this, imagine what you could write if you had 45 minutes and you were writing by hand. This answer is working out to be in the top band already.
